The news that Clint Frazier was returned from his rehab assignment was the biggest injury bombshell dropped by the Yankees prior to Monday’s makeup game with the Angels, but manager Aaron Boone also had a few positive injury notes to give, as well as one other big one.
A look at other injury news and notes of the day from Boone:
LUIS SEVERINO: Like Frazier, Severino scratched himself from a rehab outing this weekend, his at Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre, and was sent for an MRI on Monday. Boone, however, would not say any more until the team physicians examine the results.
“We’ll have a better feel tonight when the doctors and trainers get together,” Boone said. “I don’t want to go into it, we’ll see where we are tonight.
COREY KLUBER: Kluber, who has been out since May 27 with a shoulder strain, will make a rehab start at Triple-A on Tuesday. Kluber made his first rehab appearance at Double-A Somerset Thursday and was not sharp, allowing five runs on two hits and four walks over 1 1/3 innings, throwing 45 pitches.
GARY SANCHEZ: Sanchez, who went on the COVID IL on August 5, played a rehab game with Somerset on Sunday and went 0-for-3, but Boone is optimistic the catcher could return to be behind the plate for one of the games of Tuesday’s doubleheader with Boston.
“He’s out on the field and just finished up hitting, and everything went well yesterday, so we’ll get through today and see where we’re at,” Boone said.
GLEYBER TORRES: “He is improving, but not yet to where he’s had a bat in his hand, because we want to get that pain out of there,” Boone said.
CLAY HOLMES: Holmes is still in Kansas City in quarantine, but Boone said “he is doing well and feeling better each day,” and the team is hopeful he’ll be back in New York mid-week.
ANTHONY RIZZO: Rizzo did his cardiac screening Monday and is feeling better, and he will be back with the team Tuesday to go through a full workout if all goes well, but there’s no timeline for his return just yet.
“We don’t think it will be long, but we want to see how he feels and listen to him, and see him go through a full day,” Boone said.
GIO URSHELA: A return could be on the horizon for the Yankees’ third baseman, who was placed on the IL on August 3 with a left hamstring strain, but could begin a rehab assignment sometime this week.
“He ran today at about 80 percent, and likely tomorrow we’ll do some hitting and ground balls and start to ramp up baseball activities his week and possibly by the end of the week he’ll be ready to play in a rehab game or two.”
AROLDIS CHAPMAN: Like Urshela, Chapman, who has been out since August 7 due to left elbow inflammation, could be back in action sometime this week – but it could be at the major-league level, and not necessarily a rehab assignment.
“He’s throwing a bullpen today, and if that goes well, he could potentially be back by the middle of the week,” Boone said.
