AVON, Conn. (WTIC Radio)_ The State Department of Environmental Protection says a truck accident dumped thousands of gallons of oil onto the ground at the base of Avon Mountain.
The truck lost 3,000 gallons of heating oil in a crash at the intersection of Nod Road and East Main Street, around 3:30 p.m. Wednesday. The oil ran down the street and into local wetlands and the Nod Brook.
Cleanup crews remains at the scene for hours to contain the oil. Full containment is expected to last up to 48 hours. The oil has been contained just before a nearby golf course, where a pond flows into the Farmington River.
The owner of the truck has accepted responsibility.
DEEP officials report no private or public drinking water supplies were affected by this spill.
