FREE SOIL TWP. Mich. (WWJ) - One person is dead, one is hospitalized and another is in custody after an "active shooter" situation in west Michigan.
Mason County Sheriff Kim Cole said the gunman has been arrested and there is no longer any danger to the public in connection with the incident Tuesday morning, near Ludington.
One injured adult and two small children were evacuated from a home along US-31, between Hoague and Koenig roads in Free Soil Township, the sheriff's office said.
When the suspect gave himself up, shortly before 9 a.m., deputes went into the house to find a man who had been fatally shot.
Residents were told to stay inside and area businesses were placed on lockdown while the scene was unfolding.
"We went into work with a boatload of cop cars and ambulances passing by our office," said Amy Loftis, who works nearby. "We've been told there is an active shooter in the area with two people shot."
Although those lockdowns have since been lifted, non-residents were asked to continue to avoid the area as an investigation by the Michigan State Police Crime Lab continues.
The wounded adult was taken to by EMS to a hospital for treatment of serious non-life threatening injuries, the sheriff's office said. The children were not injured.
No names have been released.
