15-Year-Old Turns Himself In For Killing 10-Year-Old Boy In Warren

(WWJ) A 15-year-old boy turned himself in to Warren police for the shooting death of a 10-year-old in at the Warren Manor apartments on Dequindre Rd., north of 8 Mile Road

The boy will likely face charges later today, WWJ's Charlie Langton reported.

"Police Commissioner Bill Dwyer says the 15-year-old brought the gun to the apartment complex and was waving it around and whether it went off accidentally or was intentional is a matter of continuing investigation," Langton said.

Dwyer said it happened early Wednesday afternoon,

The critically wounded child was rushed by EMS with a police escort to Children's Hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries.

Dwyer said there were eight other kids at the apartment unit with the victim, and that investigators are still looking into what was going on inside that unit.

"They are going to be all brought into the Warren Police Department for investigation," Dwyer told WWJ Newsradio 950's Jason Scott. "There is other information that I have that they're uncooperative, and apparently they tried to hide the gun. But it's very fluid, very early in the investigation."

Officers obtained a search warrant, and recovered a small-caliber handgun.

It's still unclear where the kids got the gun.

"It could have been accidental; we're not sure yet," Dwyer said, adding however that police do not believe the victim shot himself.

Along with the younger children, Dwyer said police are also interviewing a 17-year-old girl who was at the scene. There were no adults home at the time, Dwyer said.

The victim's name has not yet been released.

This shooting happened the same day four people were hit with gunfire at a house party in suburban Warren. All survived that incident where 40 rounds were found on the scene.
