STERLING HEIGHTS, Mich. (WWJ) -- A long list of charges have been brought against three men in connection with a pair of separate police chases on Tuesday that stretched from Sterling Heights into Detroit and Roseville.
Police say 25-year-old Marcino Cartier Lattner of Westland is facing charges of unlawful driving away of an auto, fleeing and eluding, assault and malicious destruction of police property. Lattner crashed a Sterling Heights police car on I-94 near 12 Mile after stealing the cruiser.
A second man, 30-year-old Anthony Dwayne Brown of St. Clair Shores, is facing fleeing and eluding charges. He was caught in Detroit.
Authorities say a third man, Brandon Hubert, has been charged with fleeing and eluding, firearm discharge from a vehicle -- a 10-year felony -- and felony firearm -- a mandatory two-year felony. Hubert is not in custody at this time.
Police said it all started Tuesday morning near Hall Road and M-53 in Sterling Heights, as officers received a report of shots fired between a Dodge Durango and a Ford Fusion around 7:15 a.m. Officers located the Durango and attempted to stop the vehicle. Officers quickly realized the Dodge was also pursuing the Ford Fusion.
The chase continued in the area of Canterbury and Schoenherr. At that point, the driver of the Durango pulled over on a side street, allowing police to continue pursuing the Fusion. At that point, Lattner got out of the Fusion and fled on foot, with Sterling Heights officers following him on foot, as the Fusion continued in an unknown direction.
At that time, Lattner was able to double back around the officers pursuing him and jumped into a Sterling Heights patrol vehicle that was left running during the foot pursuit.
"Our officers slammed on the brakes, put the car into park and then instantly ran on foot, chased him around a couple back yards and then doubled back towards our police car, which was running and jumped in the police car and the guy took off," Sterling Height Police Chief Dale Dwojakowski told WWJ Tuesday evening.
As he fled the scene in the police vehicle, other officers followed on I-94, where the pursuit ended near 12 Mile Road when the suspect crashed into a Macomb County Sheriff's Department patrol vehicle. Lattner was arrested and no injuries were reported.
"Our roadways in Macomb County turned into the Wild West," said Macomb County Prosecutor Eric Smith. "To put innocent citizens' lives in jeopardy so that these suspects could even up some type of score is heinous in its purist definition."
While the pursuit of the stolen police vehicle was ongoing, Warren police officers located and pursued the Ford Fusion southbound on Van Dyke and into Detroit. That pursuit ended when the two suspects fled on foot in the area of Linden Drive. One of those suspects, since identified as Anthony Brown, was taken into custody..
Brown and Lattner were arraigned Thursday. Brown received a $100,000 cash/surety bond, while Lattner received a $250,000 cash/surety bond. Both would be required to wear a GPS tether
