TROY (WWJ) - A 74-year-old woman was killed in a crash that had a section of Big Beaver Road closed for hours Monday afternoon.

Police say Diana Zaccagnini, of Macomb Township, was traveling eastbound on Big Beaver around 2:15 p.m. when her car was struck by an SUV that crossed over the median near John R. She was taken to the hospital where she was pronounced dead.

The other driver, a 53-year-old Troy man, was seriously injured in the crash and was also transported to the hospital.

An investigation is now underway to determine what caused the at-fault driver to veer across the median. Police say the Mercury Mountaineer, which was traveling westbound, struck two trees before hitting Zaccagnini's Ford Taurus.

No other vehicles were involved and no one else was injured. Police say both drivers were wearing seat belts.

All lanes of eastbound Big Beaver were closed at John R for just over two hours while police were investigating the scene.

The crash remains under investigation. Anyone who witnessed the crash is asked to contact Troy police at 248-524-3477.
