MARYSVILLE, Mich. (WWJ) -- A man died after accidentally driving into the St. Clair River Saturday afternoon.

Marysville police told WWJ a 79-year-old man was in his car outside the Junction Buoy Restaurant parking lot in Marysville Saturday afternoon. Police said it was not clear how or why, but the man's car had been put into reverse and he hit the accelerator, sending his car into the St. Clair River.

Police said it was an accident and did not believe it was a suicide. Authorities were unsure if the man was disoriented at the time of the accident.

The St. Clair County Dive Team pulled the man out of his car, which was eventually towed out of the water. It took about an hour and 15 minutes to pull the man out of the water.

He was taken to a local hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

The identity of the man has yet to be released.
