TAYLOR (WWJ) - A convicted felony has been charged with attempted murder in the brutal assault of a woman carjacked in Taylor.
According to Wayne County Prosecutor Kym Worthy, 52-year-old victim was walking out of the Bed, Bath & Beyond store where she worked, Wednesday morning, when 40-year-old James Robert Farris appeared and held her at gunpoint.
He demanded that the victim drive to the nearest ATM and withdraw money, investigators say, and drove to a dead end on Huron Street. There, he allegedly choked her with a cell phone charging cord, leaving her unconscious in a puddle while he drove away in her pickup truck.
A photo shared on Facebook shows a woman said to be the victim displaying a throat crisscrossed with red marks, bruised and lacerated.
Police said Farris, an Allen Park resident, was arrested by Detroit police Wednesday night, while still in possession of the victim's vehicle.
According to Michigan Department of Corrections records, Farris has a criminal history, including armed robbery, unarmed robbery, forgery and drug charges dating back to 2001. He served prison time, but records show he was discharged from parole on May 28 of this year, just a week and a day before the Taylor attack.
Farris was arraigned in 23rd District Court Friday on the following charges: Carjacking, Armed Robbery, Assault with Intent to Murder, Unlawful Imprisonment nd two counts of Financial Transaction Device – Stealing/Retaining Without Consent.
He will be back in court for a probable cause conference scheduled for June 17, followed by a preliminary exam on June 24.
