SOUTHFIELD (WWJ) - The city of Southfield is closing its soggiest golf course for the 2019 season.

City officials say the Beech Woods Golf Course will remain closed this year while a comprehensive study of the existing infrastructure and irrigation system is performed.

Beech Woods Golf Course, located along Beech Road south of 9 Mile Road, has experienced significant flooding and irrigation issues in recent years. Officials say the current irrigation and water management system is nearly 40-years-old and is no longer operational, frequently causing water to pool throughout much of the course following heavy and even moderate rainfalls -- rendering much of the course unusable.

"When we have to close portions of the course due to flooding, it causes a ripple effect, taking many holes out of play. Often, guests end up golfing the first five holes twice to reach a full round, which is obviously not ideal," Terry Fields, Parks & Recreation Director, said in a statement. "We need to take this time to evaluate the current water management and irrigation systems and to develop a plan to address these ongoing issues."

In the interim, golfers can still take advantage of the driving range and heated tees located at the Beech Woods Golf Course as well as the nine-hole Evergreen Hills Golf Course, located at the Southfield Municipal Campus on Evergreen Road.
