(WWJ) A troubled teen was ready to jump from an iconic spot in Detroit ... but a state worker is credited with lending an ear and saving a life.
WWJ Newsradio 950's Mike Campbell reports that DNR worker Shaun Cabral was heading to his daily shift when he saw someone on the wrong side of the railing on the MacArthur Bridge. He was leaning into the water.
Cabral circled back to the bridge, parked, and told the man he wasn't a cop, but he wanted to help.
The young man stopped long enough to listen.
"I just had a conversation with him, turned out he was having a rough time and was thinking about jumping and I was able to just kind of talk to him about his problems and life in general," Cabral said.
The young man was 17, so Cabral could relate. He has a 16-year-old son.
"It was like having a conversation with my son. I convinced him that Legends was the place to go to get breakfast."
They settled in for a meal, still talking about life's troubles and the best solutions. Gently, Cabral outlined the next steps toward seeking treatment.
"At breakfast, I got him some help," Cabral said.
The teen went safely on his way.
