(WWJ) A warning for all those people whose holiday plans include a trip Up North: Beaches along Lake Michigan could be dangerous.
The National Weather Service says there could be high winds and waves up to eight feet high today and tomorrow, the traditional start of Labor Day weekend. MLive is reporting waves are expected to be 4 to 7 feet during the day on Thursday, and building to 8 feet by Thursday night. "High waves are expected from the southern end of Lake Michigan all the way up the coast to Emmet County to the north. On Friday, waves will fall back into the 4 to 7-foot range before starting to subside Friday night," per MLive.
They say that could lead to piers being submerged at times, so much so that forecasters are warning that anyone who chooses to walk along a pier is taking their life in their hands and putting first responders at risk.
The waves could also cause erosion and flooding along the lakeshore.
In addition to Lake Michigan, Lake Superior is expected to be a trouble spot for vacationers and residents. The National Weather Service in Marquette has issued a Storm Warning from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. today with wind gusts as high as 57 mph expected. Lake Superior waves could go as high as 20 feet, NWS meteorologists said.
