INDEPENDENCE TWP. (WWJ) - Police in Oakland County are searching for a hit-and-run driver who fled the scene after striking an elderly man in a wheelchair and a caretaker.
The crash happened around 10:13 p.m. Thursday outside of the Clarkston Specialty Healthcare Center on Clintonville Road near Fay Street, just south of I-75 in Independence Township.
The Oakland County Sheriff's Office says a 29-year-old employee was attempting to assist an 83-year-old man in a wheelchair out of the roadway and back inside the facility when both were struck by a passing vehicle. The suspect never stopped and continued northbound on Clintonville Road.
Both victims were taken to a hospital. The man was last reported in critical condition, while the employee is in stable condition.
The suspect vehicle is described as a black Chevrolet Monte Carlo with some type of red writing on the front. Police say the vehicle should have damage to the front passenger side and possibly a faulty rear tail light.
Anyone who witnessed the crash or has any other information is asked to contact the Oakland County Sheriff's Office tip line at 1-888-TURN-1-IN, or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-SPEAK-UP.
