PORT HURON (WWJ) - Federal agents are heralding a big marijuana seizure at the border in Port Huron.

U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) Office of Field Operations at the Blue Water Bridge says the pot was found in two different shipments during special operations last Friday, April 26.

"Over $50,000 of illegal drugs will not make it into our streets to poison our youth, and for that, I truly commend our officers' steadfast effort in protecting our nation," said port director Michael Fox in a statement.

The total weight of the two shipments were nearly 15 lbs. officials said, with an estimated street value of nearly $53,000.

While it's legal for adults to possess small amounts of marijuana for personal use in both Michigan and Canada, marijuana remains illegal under U.S. federal law -- which supersedes state law.

Those traveling between the U.S. and Canada are cautioned not to attempt to bring any cannabis products across the border. Penalties can include seizure as well as fines.
