WWJ -- More charges could be on the way for R&B singer R. Kelly, this time, with a Michigan connection.

CBS Chicago's investigative reporter Brad Edwards reports this case involves a woman who alleges she had her first sexual encounter with Kelly when she was 13 years old.

“Sources tell me the Detroit Police Department is all-in on their own R. Kelly case," Edwards said in the report.

Edwards reported that sources told him the victim states she was visiting her mother in Detroit back in December 2001. "She made contact with a friend who was a personal assistant of Kelly," the report said.

"The then-underage girl and Kelly allegedly engaged in sexual intercourse at an undisclosed hotel. Another incident took place weeks after at a recording studio."

Edwards goes on to say the woman reportedly visited Kelly Atlanta, Georgia, between the ages of 14 and 18 and she alleges Kelly gave her herpes at the age of 17.

Detroit Police Chief James Craig confirmed to WWJ Wednesday night that his department is looking into the situation.

"We are aware of the allegations made against R. Kelly that possibly occurred in 2001," Craig said in a written statement. "Approximately a month ago, (we received) information from Chicago Police Department of a victim, who lives out of state, who had made allegation of a criminal sexual conduct incident against R. Kelly. The incident allegedly occurred in the City of Detroit when the victim was 13 years old. Based on the information received, we have made several attempts to follow up with her. We have reached out, at the direction of the victim, to her lawyer and we are eagerly waiting to speak to her. Right now, we have not made contact with her."

Craig's statement went on to say the Detroit Police Department "takes criminal sexual assaults very seriously as well as all acts of violence committed against our residents." He said the department will investigate all cases "with vigor in efforts to bring justice to the victims and their families."

Edwards sent a tweet earlier Wednesday night, stating that Detroit Police Chief James Craig is "eagerly waiting" to speak to the alleged victim.

Meanwhile, R. Kelly has gone back to jail in Chicago on charges of owing $161,000 in back child support.
