CHESTERFIELD TWP., Mich. (WWJ) -- Police are warning local business owners that a habitual user of counterfeit money is active in the Chesterfield Township area.

Authorities released a surveillance photo of a man who has been seen using counterfeit money on multiple occasions.

The suspect entered Marco's Pizza along Gratiot Avenue in Chesterfield on Feb. 24 and used a counterfeit $100 bill to pay for a pop. The suspect left the restaurant in an unkown location before employees realized the bill was fake.

Police say several other businesses have reported seeing the same suspect use the same method in recent weeks.

Using or manufacturing counterfeit money is a violation of the United States Code and can be considered criminal fraud. Someone who is found guilty of intentionally creating or using counterfeit money can be fined upwards of $15,000 or be sentenced to 15 years in prison.

Anyone who recognizes the suspect or has additional information is asked to contact Detective Jason Dawidowicz of the Chesterfield Township Police Department by phone at 586-949-4265 or email at jd@chesterfieldpolice.org.
