Conservative Group Creates Cannonball Run For Trump Across Michigan

(WWJ) Remember Cannonball Run? For those uninitated in the 1980s movies of Burt Reynolds, it's usually a coast-to-coast race that's unsanctioned by any official entity.

Hijinx may ensue along the way.

A conservative group in Michigan is borrowing the concept.

The Michigan Conservative Coalition is inviting drivers to the Trump 2020 Cannonball Run, starting at the Michigan border and continuing on two routes to the Mackinac Bridge. It kicks off at high noon on October 11.

"Our massive MAGA boat parades, our MAGA Classic Car Cruise on Woodward Dream Cruise and our huge MAGA Classic Car Rally & Fly Over in Frankenmuth have set the stage for our biggest Trump event of the season," said Rosanne Ponkowski, President of the Michigan Conservative Coalition.

The Trump 2020 Cannonball Run will start at the Ohio border on I-75 and from the Indiana border on US 131.  Each route will end at the Mackinac Bridge.

To participate, the coalition says Trump supporters only need to decorate their vehicle of choice with American flags, Trump flags and similar patriotic displays -- and hit the open road.

Participants should use their car, truck, van, motorcycle or any vehicle legal on the highway selected. At high noon, using the highway entrance closest to you, go north on either I-75 or US 131.

The suggested drive is north for one hour, and then reverse course and drive south for one hour.

"Trump 2020 Cannonball Run is not a race in any sense," said Ponkowski. "This is a rolling display to show support for Trump. So drive the minimum legal speed so those watching along the route can enjoy the experience. We ask all who participate to obey all police officers, to not block any emergency vehicles and to make sure that all drivers on the highway are respected. That includes getting all drivers on and off the highway safely.  Complete suggestions for a safe event will be published."

To join a Trump 2020 Cannonball Run caravan gather at any of these designated rest stops no later than 11:30 a.m. Then, at high noon, proceed north bound on your chosen highway.

Here are the rest stops announced today: I-75 rest stops, Mile Marker #10 Monroe,Mile Marker # 94 Clarkston, Mile Marker #158 Bay City, Mile Marker # 210 West Branch, Mile Marker # 277 Gaylord, Mile Marker #338 Mackinaw City; US 131 Rest Stops, Mile Marker #43 Alamo, Mile Marker # 101 Rockford, Mile Marker # 139 Big Rapids, Mile Marker # 174 Cadillac, Mile Marker # 533 Morley.

"Michiganders, perhaps more than others, know that the road to the White House in 2020 runs through Michigan," said Ponkowksi. "As we enter the home stretch of the 2020 election cycle, let's make the Cannonball Run a special display of support for Trump. "All participants need to follow safe practices at all times, including the Michigan Safe Start guidelines.
