OXFORD, Mich. (WWJ) – When you walk into HomeGrown Brewing Co. in Oxford, you’re getting just that – a homegrown, family feel.
Founder John Powers began brewing beer in his basement a decade ago and in 2017, he and his wife, Marie, opened the restaurant on M-24 in downtown Oxford with the idea of giving customers a simple, approachable and inclusive beer-drinking experience.
“I think the world of craft beer is accessible to anyone now and everybody’s interested. Some breweries do science projects, we brew good beer that you’re gonna want to finish,” general manager Jeff Powers told WWJ’s Zach Clark.

“People dine out because they have a certain thing they’re looking for. Those six beers, they pair well with food. There’s something that is welcoming, comforting,” Powers said. “It’s not just for us to go out there and see how weird we can get. We want to make you happy. We want you to enjoy that pint.”
HomeGrown has a heavy focus on the in-house experience. The Powers family wants customers to feel at home when they’re there. But the brewery does distribute beer, with some bars pouring HomeGrown brews from the taps, and some stores carrying it on their shelves.
Being in their own home town, the family loves being able to get the community involved, utilizing locally grown products in their beer and food menus.
“Being outside an immediate metro area, there’s a lot of agriculture within arms reach, and that’s where we’ve built our menu out of and how we source and design our beer menu. I don’t think you need to be in a downtown metro location to offer a quality craft beer product. That was a thing with our flagship beers, was approachable,” Powers said.
The HomeGrown kitchen is closed on Mondays, but they offer hot dogs and discounted beers. On Tuesdays, they offer a pub menu and Wed.-Saturday, their full menu is on display. Brunch is available from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Sundays and the chefs put out a “Sunday Funday” menu for dinner.
