DETROIT (WWJ) - Some Detroit city employees are under suspicion of being intoxicated while on the clock.

An investigation is underway after the workers were caught allegedly smoking and drinking in a vacant lot. The employees are also being tested for drugs.

"We are conducting a random drug screening based on reasonable suspicion of activity," a city spokesperson said in a statement. "This is something that's not uncommon amongst companies and as we conduct the tests, we must respect the privacy of the employees involved."

The spokesperson said employees were randomly selected from a working group, not a location for the screening.

"Should there positive results the appropriate steps will be taken," the statement said. "Our policy is that if anyone tests positive, that is grounds for termination."

The investigation is ongoing.
