DETROIT (WWJ) -- A suspect is in critical condition after being shot multiple times following a confrontation with Detroit police officers on the city's west side Saturday night that left three officers injured.

Officers attempted to make contact with a man who was seen driving the wrong way down an alley in the area of Greenfield and Puritan around 10:30 p.m. When they approached the suspect, he got out of his car and began firing gunshots at them. One officer was hit, while two others were injured when they were pinned between their cruiser and the suspect's vehicle as he tried to get away.

Police Chief James Craig says officers were able to catch the suspect at a nearby residence. Craig said the suspect has a prior criminal history.

The suspect was shot five times and was listed in critical condition at a hospital.

The officer who was shot was expected to make a full recovery.

"Our officer that was shot is spirited, in good condition. He was shot doing his job, but it appears he's going to be okay," Craig said.

Craig said while National Police Week, May 12-18, is a good way to honor fallen officers, he also wants to commend those still living and working in the line of duty.

"I talk about our officers who are still here, who are still walking among us, who are in fact heroes," Craig said. "These officers certainly are heroic. This officer has a positive attitude, is ready to get back out and continue to keep our city safe."
