DETROIT (WWJ) - Students in Detroit are getting some extra help -- outside the classroom.

The Detroit Public Schools Community District has launched the Homework Hotline, a free resource available for all K-12 students to receive help on their schoolwork after hours.

The hotline -- 1-833-466-3978 -- is staffed by certified DPSCD teachers and available Monday through Thursday from 5 to 8 p.m.

"An important part of student success happens after school hours," superintendent Nikolai Vitti said in a statement. "At the same time, as a district, we know this can be a challenge for our students and families. We are committed to doing everything we can as a district to overcome barriers that prevent student success. The Homework Hotline is yet another resource to empower our students and families."

Students should be prepared with their homework materials and questions in advance. Parents can also contact the hotline for support while helping their children at home.

Bi-lingual tutors are available for students on a second language hotline at 1-866-879-1195.
