DETROIT (WWJ) – Considering Michelle Obama's immense popularity, she really didn't need to have a documentary made about her during the time she was on tour promoting her memoir, 'Becoming'.  But what a tragedy it would have been had this movie not been made.  'Becoming' is a mesmerizing film that offers a rare glimpse into Mrs. Obama's personal life and the experiences she had while on tour promoting her book.

When 'Becoming' opens, viewers follow the former first lady as she leaves her home in a long black Chevrolet SUV chauffeured by two Secret Service agents.  She tells those watching that she enjoys listening to music while en route to whichever destination she's heading to; the music she chooses, she explains, depends on her mood.  While riding along, we "thump it out" with Mrs. Obama, while she listens to the very apropos "A God Like You," from Kirk Franklin.

Throughout the course of 'Becoming', viewers get an intimate look inside Mrs. Obama's life.  We see how close she is with her family; her mother, Marian Shields Robinson, is always close by.  Her brother, Craig Robinson, is also frequently by her side.  Their closeness and the love they have for one another is evident even though Craig comments that "no one should have to deal with their sister being the most popular person in the world."

Although not as much, her two adoring daughters, Malia and Sasha, are also featured.  And, of course, there's her husband, President Barack Obama.  Many viewers will learn something about their relationship that they didn't know before.  And it's a surprise that just might cause other couples to look at their relationships differently.

But something that we see regularly – at every stop she makes during her book tour around the globe – is how much she's loved and adored by people everywhere she goes.  Young people seek her advice while hanging on her every word.  Venues are packed and those wanting to meet her and get an autograph stand in long lines just for a chance to say hello.  And for good reason.  Michelle Obama is an amazing woman who's accomplished what very few people ever will.  But, she has a way of making everyone feel like they're talking to their sister or their best friend.  For all of these reasons and more, I think everyone should take some time out of their day while staying home and staying safe to watch 'Becoming' on Netflix.  You'll be very glad you did.

'Becoming' releases globally on Netflix on Wednesday, May 6, 2020.
