Fire Sparked In Michigan When Man Puts Gas In Running Generator

(WWJ) Firefighters from eight departments worked overnight to put out house and garage fire, near Pontiac Trail and Five Mile in Salem Township, Mich. that began when the homeowner went to refuel his generator because of a power outage. 

The generator was still running and the gas caught fire.  The Fire Chief said it happened at about 2 a.m. Thursday.


Firefighters' work was hampered by high winds from overnight storms that caused more than 200,000 power outages across metro Detroit.

No injuries were reported in this blaze, but the home and garage will be a total loss, firefighters reported. 

Fire crews from Northville, Northville Township, South Lyon, Lyon Township, Green Oak Township, Ann Arbor Township, Superior Township, along with crews from Hart Ambulance, Huron Valley Ambulance and State Police helped extinguish the fire. 

Working together, first responsers were able to ensure a barn nearby didn't catch on fire; The horse inside was uninjured.
