DETROIT (WWJ) - Police say a 33-year-old who tried to evade police in Detroit was arrested after causing a crash off I-96.

The incident unfolded around 7:20 a.m. Saturday when a State Police trooper attempted to stop a vehicle on Grand River Avenue and Schaefer for an unspecified traffic violation.

Police say the driver failed to stop and went on to enter westbound I-96, where he allegedly threw a pistol from the vehicle. The driver exited at Greenfield, police said, and caused a traffic crash at the top of the exit ramp involving two other vehicles.

The trooper arrived shortly after the crash and was able to arrest the suspect.

One of the drivers in the crash suffered minor injuries.

The pistol was recovered.

The suspect has been transfered to the Detroit Detention Center.
