I-94 Shuts Down While Drivers Spin Out, Cheer, 'We On 94 Wit It' [VIDEO]

(WWJ) This summer, a crew of dangerous drivers were spinning and cursing and cheering while they were 'on the Lodge wit it.'

And this weekend, the roving band of drivers who shut down metro Detroit freeways to spin out dangerously and cheer each other on took the show on the road.

This time, they were on I-94 with it.

Fellow motorists backed up as far as the eye could see while they stood on the freeway to race and do spin outs. Footage was shot for social media.

Speaking to reporters Monday afternoon, Detroit Police Chief James Craig said the incident — what he's calling "360 activity" — took place Sunday night on westbound I-94 at Trumbull.

"There was, as all of you know, a social media post that depicted a large group of individuals blocking traffic on our freeway," the chief said. "This is not acceptable."

Craig said his department is working to identify those involved in this “ridiculous" crime; that all will face charges, and their vehicles will be seized.

"This is a new area; this sideshow activity is fairly new. I think they find it very exciting to take over a local freeway system and then post it on Facebook," Craig said. "It's not exciting. It's a very dangerous public safety disaster ready to happen.

"So, again, to the critics who say we could be doing better things: This is the right thing to do, and we're not going to let it go."

The chief said these offenders are covering their license plates with signs using an expletive to refer to the DPD.

However: "We have a pretty good lead on that red or orange Camaro," he said. "What we've preliminarily learned as that this person resides outside the city of Detroit."

Craig said there is one suspect, who was allegedly at the scene Sunday night, already in custody. That man, Craig said, was involved in the blocking of traffic on I-94.

"He was not arrested for that," Craig said. "We arrested him because, roughly...I think it was the latter part of November, he was involved in a sideshow 360 activity. And during that activity he struck a pedestrian. That pedestrian is in critical condition still recovering at a local hospital."

The suspect is facing felony charges of failing to stop at the scene of an accident resulting in serious impairment or death, and reckless driving causing serious impairment of a body function, Craig said.

The man's name is being withheld pending an arraignment.

While the investigation is ongoing, Craig is asking anyone who has information about this or any similar incident — especially one in which someone was hit and injured — to call Detroit police. Tipsters can remain anonymous by calling Crime Stoppers at 1-800-SPEAK-UP.
