(WWJ) A Wayne County jail inmate has been ordered held without bond on murder and other charges in the death of Wayne County Sheriff's Department Corporal Bryant Searcy.
The Wayne County Prosecutor's office charged Deandre Williams, 28, with first degree premeditated murder, murder of a police officer, unarmed robbery for taking jail keys and escaping jail through violence.
The 50-year-old Searcy was killed a week ago when he was attacked while inspecting jail cells. Investigators say Williams lunged out and beat Searcy senseless. He was transported to the hospital with critical injuries, where he died.
The two men's past interaction is yet unknown.
"Searcy was on duty inspecting jail cells when it is alleged that he was killed by the defendant after a violent struggle," the prosecutor's office said. "Other deputies arrived at the location and found Cpl. Searcy unresponsive. Medics arrived on the scene and transported him to a local hospital for treatment, but he succumbed to his injuries. Other facts and evidence will be placed on the record in court at the Preliminary Examination."
Prosecutor Kym Worthy said the crime is horrific.
"It has been almost a week since the horrific murder of Corporal Bryant Searcy and it is still very raw. Much has been said lately about the dangers that law enforcement officials face every day. This is no exaggeration. This case is a tragic example of this reality," Worthy said.
Williams was arraigned in 36th District Court Wednesday morning and was remanded to jail. He will be back in court for a Probable Cause Conference on Sept. 23, followed by a Preliminary Examination scheduled for Sept. 30 before Judge Kenyetta Stanford Jones.
Visitation for Searcy will be held Thursday, Sept. 10, from 3 p.m. to 7 p.m. at O. H. Pye, III Funeral Home, located at 17600 Plymouth Rd. in Detroit.
