HAMTRAMCK, Mich. (WWJ) -- Detroit native rocker Jack White has vocal about backing a campaign to restore the historic Hamtramck Stadium, the former home of the Detroit Stars and one of just five Negro League stadiums still in existence today.
On Thursday, White whill play in a charity game at the stadium to benefit the restoration project, along with Raconteurs bandmate and Michigan native Brendan Benson and other friends. His team will play against a team of Detroit media members, according to the Detroit Free Press.
The game is set for noon on Thursday at Hamtramck Stadium, located at 3201 Dan Street in Hamtramck. The event is free to the public and money will be raised by donations and an online auction of autographed gear.
White, who is a noted Tigers fan and follower of baseball in general, donated $10,000 to kickstart a campaign to restore the stadium, which was home to the Stars in the final years of their existence in the Negro Leagues. That campaign, which reportedly raised more than $60,000, will help rejuvenate the stadium for local use.
The project includes restoring the baseball field for regular use, updating existing structures, as well as brand new soccer and cricket pitches that would be open for public use.
White is a co-owner of the company Warstic, along with former Tiger Ian Kinsler. Warstic creates MLB-certified bats. White's team will go by the name Warstic Woodmen, facing the Motor City All-Stars.
Thursday's event will include a food truck, shaved ice and merchandise available for purchase.
The charity game comes one day ahead of the Raconteurs' North American tour, which begins this weekend with shows at Detroit's Masonic Temple Theatre Friday and Saturday.
