ADDISON TWP. (WWJ) - Authorities have recovered the body of a 33-year-old Tennessee man who disappeared in a northern Oakland County lake while kayaking in the middle of the night.
Police got a 911 call just before 2 a.m. Tuesday from a woman who said her sister and a man were kayaking when their boats overturned on Lakeville Lake, near 32 Mile Road and Rochester Road in Addison Township.
"It was reported that they were kayaking and he lost contact with his partner," Dan Marsh, with the Addison Township Fire Department, told WWJ's Mike Campbell.
The woman was able to make it to shore after swimming for approximately 30 minutes. At that point, the caller went out by boat to search for the man. She found his kayak but could not locate the man.
The Oakland County Sheriff's Dive Team responded to the scene and launched a sonar device. Around 9 a.m., the man's body was located nearly 250 feet from shore and submerged in 6-8 feet of water.
An autopsy will determine an official cause of death. The incident remains under investigation.
The man was apparently visiting the area from Knoxville, TN.
