Long Range Winter Forecast For Metro Detroit: 'Pretty Nasty'

(WWJ) Pouring over maps and charts, AccuWeather's Paul Pastelok and Dean DeVore gave WWJ Newsradio 950 a personalized account of what metro Detroit residents should expect this winter.

Brace yourselves. Old Man Winter is coming in hard, and he seems angry.

"I do know that there's more to come this winter," Pastelok said about a winter that has already dumped at least nine inches of snow on parts of metro Detroit and buried the Upper Peninsula in up to 20 inches.

How will the polar vortex affect us this winter? A strong vortex driving down the cold from Siberia will mean chillier temperatures -- 1 to 2 degrees colder than usual.

The vortex will weaken periodically throughout the season, and the weather will stay tranquil in those spells.

But by late January and February it could get "pretty nasty," they predicted.

Overall, expect more than the average 43 inches of snow that generally strikes metro Detroit in a winter. There could be upwards of 50 inches this season.

"Hey, we're on our way already, we've already got a good start. We're going to see a lot more coming our way," Pastelok said.
