(WWJ) It's an annual event, but the crystal clear skies anticipated tonight will be especially conducive to a beautiful sight -- the Quandrantid Meteor Shower.
Look up!
Specifically, Michael Narlock, head of astronomy at Cranbrook, recommends looking toward the Big Dipper, in the north sky. Wait and watch what unfolds.
"It certainly looks good right now," Narlock told WWJ Newsradio. "It's kind of an easier one to spot because all you have to do is look for the Big Dipper."
Narlock recommends averting your vision a bit. The shower is best seen through your peripheral vision.
Once you spot it, you're in for a treat: Narlock says you could see between 60 and 80 meteors an hour.
He advises to check at about midnight, although you can go out anytime you're comfortable.
Dave Samhuel, a meteorologist at AccuWeather, says we're going to have clear skies most of the night for optimal viewing. For the absolute best view, he recommends heading outside between 10 p.m. and 3 a.m.
"It's pretty good luck for us because it's usually cloudy this time of year," Samhuel said.
The forecast calls for clear skies overnight with lows in the upper 20s to low 30s. Wind will blow from the southwest at 8 to 12 mph.
Another sunny day will unfold Friday with highs in the mid to upper 40s. The low at night will dip to about 30 degrees.
