MACKINAC ISLAND (WWJ) - Mackinac Island is the gem of northern Michigan, but how does it compare to the rest of America's small towns?
All 20 nominees on the list have big histories and small populations, with fewer than 30,000 residents. Mackinac Island Tourism Director Tim Hygh says the island is about more than history.
"Not only do we have history, which is kind of the wallpaper of the island, there's all the different things you can do. You can spend the night at a unique hotel or bed and breakfast, or being able to go to the Fudge Capital of the World," Hygh said. "And if you come in June, you get to see a second round of lilacs. And you always get the carriage rides and the horses. And there's no cars -- it's all bicycles."
