VAN BUREN TWP., Mich. (WWJ) -- An investigation is underway in Wayne County after a man was shot in a Walmart parking lot Tuesday night.

The incident happened just before 10 p.m. at the Walmart on Belleville Road in Van Buren Township.

According to police, two people were involved in an "unlawful transaction" when one "bad guy shot another bad guy."

WWJ listener Raluca Williams was shopping when the victim ran in the grocery and pharmacy entrance to seek help. She said it appeared the man had been shot in the chest. Employees inside the Walmart cut his clothes off to administer aid before an ambulance arrived, she said.

"It’s very strange," Williams told WWJ's Jason Scott. "I hope he’s OK, but a complete surprise. Nothing like that really happens in this area."

The victim was taken to the hospital for treatment. His condition isn't known, but police say he was alert at last check.

Only a single shot was fired, according to police, and no one else was injured.

The gunman fled the scene and remains at large. No description was provided.
