(WWJ) A scary situation unfolded in western Oakland County overnight as a man started throwing heavy sandbags from an overpass onto I-96.

Michigan State Police say a woman was taken to a hospital with serious injuries after one of the 40-pound sandbags crashed through her windshield as she drove on I-96 near Old Plank Road in Lyon Township.

The investigation showed this: A man allegedly crashed his truck on the freeway and walked up the embankment to the overpass, which is under construction. The man then began throwing the sandbags from the overpass onto the freeway and cars passing by underneath.

The suspect eventually left the scene and was taken home to Brighton by another driver, the circumstances of which are unclear.

But he told the driver who took him home what happened and that driver called State Police.

"The victim was very lucky she wasn't more seriously hurt or killed," said MSP Metro Detroit, in a tweet. " Throwing anything on to the freeway from a overpass or the the embankment can cause serious damage, injuries or death. Don't do it!"

The man is facing charges of assault causing great bodily harm, damage to private property and throwing objects at motor vehicles causing injury.  He's in the Oakland County jail.
