ROYAL OAK, Mich. (WWJ) – Patients at Beaumont Children’s Hospital in Royal Oak got a surprise on Monday, when Mark Wahlberg paid a visit.

The actor and former musical artist, now co-founder of the Wahlburgers burger restaurant chain with his brothers Paul and Donnie, made a trip to metro Detroit -- along with Paul -- to visit several of their restaurants in the area and spend time with patients at the hospital.

In particular, Wahlberg visited Hudson Brown, a young proton therapy patient he met at the hospital during a visit last year. Wahlberg also spent time in the hospital’s play room with several young patients, saying he is inspired by the children’s resolve.

Earlier in the day, Paul Wahlberg, the chain’s executive chef, attended a ribbon-cutting ceremony at the Wahlburgers SportsPlex in Taylor.

After visiting the hospital, the brothers headed to the Royal Oak restaurant, where they held a benefit for the Children’s Miracle Network.

Mark Wahlberg, the youngest of nine children raised in the Dorchester neighborhood of Boston, Mass., says he’s enjoyed spending time in Michigan and metro Detroit over the past few years and says he feels like he’s part of the community.

“What’s not to like? Especially this time of year; it’s so beautiful,” Wahlberg said. “I’ve made so many friends and people that I consider family here. To be able to come visit, be welcomed with open arms in Michigan and also be able to create jobs here and be part of the community, it’s absolutely amazing.”

The Wahlbergs are active in every community where they have a Walburgers restaurant. They currently have 33 locations throughout North America and the U.K. Last year the company launched an at-home retail beef product, sold in stores across the U.S.
