(WWJ) The subject line usually says "receipt" or "invoice," but it may as well say "gotcha!" Michigan State Police are alerting businesses to an increase in malicious campaigns.

The messages contain an attachment with a virus that can steal a variety of information, including email contacts, banking information and passwords.

"Email theft in Michigan is skyrocketing and largely  unimpeded across the state as we've seen in news. Crooks are contemplating quick cash and will pilfer mail order drugs, packages and checks," Detective Sgt. Jeff Hoffman with Michigan State Police's cyber security unit told WWJ Newsradio.

If you get an email from an address you don't recognize with the subject line "receipt" or "invoice" -- beware.

But that's not all: The bottom line is to use caution when opening any attachment.

Unsure about the origin of something in your inbox? Hoffman has this tip: Hit reply, but don't send.

"If you hit reply, it's going to show you the actual email address it's replying to. If it's not your contact or not who you expected the email to go to, that would be a red flag," he said.
