DETROIT (WWJ) - A $10,000 reward is being offered for the tip the leads in an arrest in the murder of celebrated Detroit DJ Byron Gilbert.
Gilbert — better known as DJ Slick B — was gunned down in what police described as an ambush on February 7 in the 1000 block of W. McNichols, just west of Woodward Ave., on the city's west side.
According to investigators, at around 7:30 p.m., the 28-year-old Gilbert and another man were walking to one of their vehicles when the suspect suddenly emerged from the car and attempted to rob them at gunpoint.
Both Gilbert and his companion were shot. Gilbert died from his injuries; while the other man, 25, survived.
After the shooting, the suspect fled the scene in a dark color SUV, possibly a black Dodge Durango.
Gilbert's two children, mother and other loved ones were scheduled to speak at a Crime Stoppers news confrence Friday afternoon, to plead for information that could help bring justice in this case.
"On Feb 7, 2020, our lives changed and will never be the same. These cowards did this to my son," his mom, Tosha Gilbert-Scott, wrote on Facebook. "Such a senseless act. I need these stupid ass cowards to come out of hiding. Somebody knows who did this. Our family needs justice for my son who was also a father, significant other, brother, uncle, godfather, cousin and a best friend. I won't stop until we find out who did this to my son."
Gilbert was well-known as a fixture in Detroit's music scene.
City Councilwoman Mary Sheffield offered her condolences, referring Gilbert's "kind and giving spirit" in a tweet.
