(WWJ) Warren police made dozens of arrests during a special operation aimed at taking guns and drugs off the streets.
Warren Police Commissioner Bill Dwyer said the three-week sweep dubbed Operation SNAG — "Saving Neighborhoods Against Guns" — led to the arrest of 129 people on various felony charges, including:
"Twelve delivery and manufacture of heroin, fentanyl, cocaine and synthetic drugs," Dwyer told WWJ Newsradio 950 Jon Hewett and other reporters. "Nine parole violations, including one person who was just recently paroled for second degree murder and possession of a firearm illegally."
Dwyer said a "substantial quality" of narcotics and over $100,000 in cash was recovered.
A total of 75 guns were also seized, Dwyer said, four which were believed to be used in other crimes. One of those crimes was a homicide outside of Warren, Dwyer said.
"So time will tell how many open cases may be closed around the metro area after these weapons are processed and analyzed," Dwyer added.
The special enforcement was set up after a 10-year-old boy was shot and killed at a local apartment complex.
Dwyer said those arrested were from all over the state plus from Georgia, Oklahoma and North Dakota.
"Those who plan to commit violent crime should stay out of Warren, and that's a strong message," Dwyer said. "This is our fifth operation (like this) we've conducted in a little over a year."
The names of those in custody were not immediately released.
