CLAWSON, Mich. (WWJ) -- Police are warning the community to be alert after a pair of "stranger danger" incidents were reported in Clawson over the weekend.
Authorities say around 5 p.m. two 10-year-old boys were walking home from Kenwood Elementary School when they felt like they were being followed by a man in a black SUV. The boys ran home and contact police, describing the man as an elderly white male with gray sideburns, wearing dark reading glasses and a black shirt.
A couple hours later, a nine-year-old girl told police she was approached by a Hispanic man in a black Kia Soul, who asked to pet her dog, near the corner of Elmsford Drive and Washington Avenue. The SUV was later spotted near the corner of Highland and Custer Avenues, which is near Clawson Park and within a few blocks of several Clawson school buildings.
Authorities released a photo of the black Kia SUV.
Police are not sure if the incidents are related, but commended the kids for knowing how to react to the incidents.
"The boys did an awesome job of sticking together and running home," police said in a statement.
Clawson police offered some tips to keep kids safe:
- Safety in numbers! Try to walk with a partner or small group whenever possible.
- Say "No" if you feel threatened or uncomfortable. Trust your gut!
- It's okay to run away from a dangerous situation and seek help from a trusted adult
- Immediately contact police if you are approached or lured by a stranger, feel threatened, or see a suspicious circumstance
- Always tell an adult where you are going and who you will be with
- Never answer the door for someone you do not know and never tell anyone you are home alone
- Be alert!!
- Carry a personal safety alarm or signaling
Police are still investigating the incidents and asking anyone who saw the vehicle or anyone who may have any information about the incidents to call Clawson dispatch at 248-524-3477.
