TAYLOR (WWJ) - A 21-year-old man who eluded police Downriver for weeks is behind bars after he turned himself in.

Police in Taylor and surrounding communities had been searching for Walter Clyde Hollandsworth since he was identified as a suspect in the shooting of a 20-year-old man in the 6100 block of Dean St. on Sept. 12.

The victim, who has not been named publicly, was shot in the abdomen, underwent surgery at Beaumont Hospital Dearborn and is now recovering at home.

Police said Hollandsworth, accompanied by several other people, walked into the lobby of the Taylor Police Department Monday night.  He identified himself and told the desk officer: "I want to turn myself in."

Deputy Chief Richard Hopper took Hollandsworth into custody without incident.

As he was being processed, police said they found not only the felony warrant related to the shooting, but two other warrants for Hollandsworth's arrest out of other communities.

Hollandsworth was arraigned in 23rd District Court Tuesday on a charge of assault with intent to commit murder.

Bond was set at a $750,000 cash and a pretrial conference was scheduled for Oct. 14.

Police have not released any additional information in the case, including what may have led up to the shooting.
