DETROIT (WWJ) - Authorities say dozens of fugitives and violent offenders in Detroit and throughout Wayne County were taken off the streets during a three-day sting known as "Operation Purge."
The sting, which involved multiple agencies, led to 44 arrests, including 38 fugitives. The FBI says those arrested were wanted on a variety of felony charges including assault, robbery, weapons offenses and domestic violence.
Investigators reviewed more than 2,300 warrants over the three-day period and discovered that 360 offenders were deceased, 80 were already in jail and 384 were found out of state.
More arrests are expected in the future.
"The residents of the City of Detroit and Wayne County should not have to worry about violent fugitives roaming freely on their streets," Special Agent in Charge Steven D'Antuono, FBI's Detroit Division, said in a statement. "The FBI, along with our law enforcement partners, will continue to assist these communities to take back their streets and to help make our neighborhoods safe so that residents can go about their lives from fear of violence."
Operation Purge was conducted by: FBI Detroit's Violent Crimes Task Force, Violent Gang Task Force, and Organized Crime Squad; US Marshals Service's Detroit Fugitive Apprehension Team; ATF's FIT; the Wayne County's Sheriff's Department and the Detroit Police Department.
