 **UPDATE: 6/10 — Warren Police Say No Excessive Force Used In Case Of Amazon Driver Who Allegedly Resisted Arrest

========================================

(WWJ) The Warren Police Department has launched an investigation into an incident between a city police officer and a black Amazon delivery driver.

Warren Mayor Jim Fouts on Tuesday called for the officer's immediate dismissal, but backed down from that when Warren PD Commissioner Bill Dwyer asked that an investigation first be completed.

While police confirmed to WWJ Newsradio 950 that there was indeed an altercation involving a cop, but said they're still looking into exactly what took place.

Here is what the mayor wrote in an email about the incident:

"There was an outrageous and unacceptable physical altercation with a Warren Police officer involving a young African American delivery man for Amazon to a Warren home today. I have spoken with Police Commissioner Bill Dwyer and have ordered that this officer be terminated immediately. I have zero tolerance for this disgusting act against an innocent person. If the last two weeks have taught us anything, it is that bad behavior by ANY police officer will not be tolerated! And I'm calling on the Macomb County Prosecutor to look into this situation to see if charges should be brought against this individual and the U.S. Attorney if this was a civil rights violation.

"The policy of the Warren Police Department and the training provided to every officer is to deescalate every situation. This officer did not follow policy or his training and is not fit to serve the citizens in Warren."

It's unclear if anyone was injured. No names or further were details immediately released.

Speaking to WWJ earlier in the day, Fouts said while he supports the Black Lives Matter movement, he is strongly opposed to de-funding of the police force, calling the notion floated by some protest groups "a bad idea:"

"But I do agree that we must make our officers responsible and well-trained and (in Warren) that they are," the mayor said. "I know that the states are considering making some of these mandatory requirements regarding deescalation and things of that nature. We already do that and we'll continue to do it."

Along with deescalation, Fouts said Warren cops are trained in cultural diversity, proper use of force techniques, and proper decision making and use of lethal force.

Fouts said he agrees with Detroit Mayor Duggan that citizens "want more police not less," and said that any proposal by the Warren City Council de-fund the police will be met with a strong veto.

All of this comes amid a backdrop of ongoing protests in metro Detroit and nationwide following the killing of George Floyd by police Minneapolis, Minnesota. Several officers have been charged in that case, including the one seen on video kneeling on Floyd's neck.

Fouts said the Floyd's death  "would most likely not have happened in Warren because of our on-going efforts to prevent this horrendous situation."
