ANN ARBOR, Mich. (WWJ) -- Ann Arbor police have issued a crime alert after a pair of off-campus home invasions occurred within 10 minutes of each other near the University of Michigan on Wednesday afternoon.

Police say around 12:50 p.m., a resident in the 700 block of Arbor Street discovered a suspect inside their home. The resident told police the man was searching for returnable cans.

Less than 10 minutes later in the 1000 block of Hill Street, a U-M student saw who is believed to be the same suspect inside his room on the second floor. The student confronted the suspect, who fled downstairs and left the scene.

The suspect is described as between 40 and 55 years old, around 5-foot-8, with a beard and mustache. He was last seen wearing a black coat with the hood up, blue jeans, and a maroon winter beanie hat, according to police.

Police are investigating the incidents and say both homes were occupied and unlocked when the suspect entered. Police are reminding all residents to keep exterior doors and windows locked, and to report any suspicious behavior.
