CLINTON TOWNSHIP (WWJ) - Police say a bicyclist may have been drinking before he was fatally struck by a vehicle in Clinton Township.
The crash happened around 6:40 p.m. Wednesday along Gratiot Avenue near Hall Road.
According to police, the 58-year-old Michael McGovern was riding his bike in the roadway, traveling from the west side of the road to the east, when he was struck by a 2012 Honda Insight that was traveling northbound in the left through lane.
The Honda immediately stopped and the driver rendered aid. McGovern was transported to McLaren Macomb hospital where he was pronounced dead.
The driver of the Honda is not suspected of alcohol or drug use, according to police, but alcohol usage is suspected and may have been a factor on McGovern's part. Initial reports indicate he was on his way to a local church when the crash occurred.
Police say Gratiot had one street light near the crash scene, but it provided little illumination to the area.
The crash remains under investigation.
Anyone who may have witnessed the crash or has any other information is asked to contact police at 586-493-7931 or 586-615-2525.
