Murder Charge Sought Against 18-Year-Old Boyfriend In Warren Woman's Death

WARREN (WWJ) - An 18-year-old man is expected to be charged with first-degree murder after his girlfriend was shot to death in Warren.

The woman, identified by family members as India Mackey, was shot at a home along Shirley Avenue, near 10 Mile and Hayes roads, late Tuesday night -- just one day after her 20th birthday. Police say the shooting took place after an argument of some kind.

Shortly after the shooting, police stopped a vehicle for driving erratically in the area of 9 Mile Road and Gratiot Avenue in Eastpointe and found Mackey inside suffering from a gunshot wound. The vehicle was driven by a man identified as Mackey's 18-year-old boyfriend.

Mackey was rushed to the hospital where she was pronounced dead. The man was taken into custody for questioning and later placed under arrest.

Other circumstances surrounding the incident weren't immediately released.

Mackey's father, Joseph Polk, said she had been dating her boyfriend for about a year. Reports indicate the young couple had been living together in the home for just a few months.

"I just -- I got a call from my son, he said his mom called him and the boyfriend called her and all he said was she was dead," Polk told WWJ's Charlie Langton.

Polk said he isn't too familiar with Mackey's boyfriend, but he didn't get the best first impression.

"I don't know him personally. We met, my daughter introduced me to him, but I talked to her and I was like, 'He ain't the one, baby,'" said Polk.

The boyfriend remains in custody. Police say he could be arraigned as early as Wednesday.

An investigation is ongoing.
