DETROIT (WWJ) – The city of Detroit is ready to usher in the holiday season with the 16th annual tree lighting in Campus Martius Park.

The ceremony begins at 5 p.m. Friday, Nov. 22 and is free to the public.

Officials will light the 60-foot-tall Michigan-grown Norway Spruce, which is wrapped in more than 19,000 multi-colored lights and ornaments, just before 8 p.m.

More than 50,000 people are expected to attend, so be sure to arrive early.

Headlining the show at Campus Martius Park is Detroit's own Grammy-nominated artist Mayer Hawthorne.

Guests will also enjoy performances from the Detroit Youth Choir, World Champion Figure Skater and two-time Olympian Yuka Sato, and Olympian Miari Nagasu, the first American figure skater to land a triple axel at the 2018 Winter Olympics.

The Salvation Army of Metro Detroit will also be kicking off its 2019 Red Kettle Campaign with the lighting of the world's tallest red kettle in downtown Detroit, which stands an astonishing 56 feet tall and 24 feet wide and contains 25,000 red LEDs. It signifies the campaign and draws attention to the volunteer bell ringers that will be out and about across the area collecting funds at those iconic red kettles.

FREE shuttles will run from Campus Martius Park to Beacon Park from 4:30 p.m. to midnight with pick up on Michigan and Griswold, and First and Plaza.

At Beacon Park, guests can watch a live stream of Detroit's Tree Lighting and enjoy live performances inside the heated Winter Lodge tent. Santa will also make an appearance at Beacon Park, alongside the incredible, larger-than-life holiday lighting installments and the Detroit Children's Tree, which all transforms the park into a winter wonderland!
