DETROIT (WWJ) - A Detroit man has been ordered held without bond, accused of hitting and killing a 2-year-old boy.

Randon McMeekins, 28, was arraigned in 36th District Court Monday on one count of felony murder and one count of first degree child abuse in connection with the beating death of the toddler last Friday.

According to prosecutors, a little before 9 a.m. on Sept. 27, McMeekins drove the young victim to a local hospital where the child was pronounced dead.

It's alleged that, earlier that day McMeekins had struck the toddler -- at a home in the 9300 block of Cloverlawn, in the area of Grand River Ave. and I-96 in Detroit -- causing his death.

Authorities said McMeekins and the victim "were acquainted," but did not offer any details about their relationship. The child's name has not been released.

The Wayne County Prosecutor's Office said further facts and evidence in the case will be presented at the preliminary examination, scheduled for Oct. 17.

McMeekins remains in custody in the Wayne County Jail awaiting his next court appearance, a probable cause conference, set for Oct. 10.
