(WWJ) Detroit Police are trying to identify and track down a suspect wanted for a carjacking involving a mother and baby on the city’s west side.

Police say the suspect approached the mother, 35, and her baby girl, 7 months, while the mother was getting some belongings out of the passenger seat of her 2011 Volvo.

The suspect “entered the vehicle through the driver’s side, put the vehicle in reverse and struck the two victims, knocking them to the ground,” according to a Detroit Police press release.

It happened on Sussex Ave. near Pickford St., on March 7 around 4 am.

The mother was hospitalized for minor injuries. The baby was hospitalized in critical condition, but she has since been discharged.

The mother’s car was discovered in the area of Whitcomb and Thatcher ‘shortly’ afterward. Police tell WWJ the suspect got away in a “dark colored Jeep Compass with damage to the front bumper.”
