(WWJ) A busy section of I-696 in Oakland County was shut down for hours Tuesday after a semi-truck crashed, causing fuel to spill across the freeway.
The crash happened during the peak of the morning commute along eastbound I-696 near Greenfield Road.
Police said the driver lost control of the truck and crossed all lanes of travel before striking the right side retaining wall several times. The collision caused a load of rolled steel to fall off the truck.
All lanes were blocked, with gawker delays also reported along westbound I-696.
"This is going to be -- with the cleanup of the fuel, which is the hardest part because we have to make sure it didn't go into the sewer system -- this is going to be a couple, three hours (closure) for sure," Michigan State Police Lt. Mike Shaw said live on WWJ at 8:30 a.m.
The freeway finally reopened to traffic at around 2:45 p.m.
Shaw said it wasn't clear exactly how much fuel spilled, but the amount on the freeway stretched anywhere from 25- to 30-yards.
The truck was the only vehicle involved in the crash.
"Usually that kind of puts us toward going too fast for the road conditions," said Shaw.
No injuries were reported.
While the scene has cleared, drivers should expect some residual delays.
