Firefighters Battle Flames, Bitter Temps At Troy Office Building

TROY (WWJ) - An early morning fire in Troy appears to have damaged a company that creates direct mail advertising.

The fire took off early Friday on the first floor of the SaveOn office building along Maple Road just east of Crooks Road.

Assistant Fire Chief Chuck Riesterer said crews quickly responded to the scene and had the blaze under control, but the bitter cold temperatures at the time did nothing to help.

"You've got crews on the inside that are protected by the building but the crews that are on the outside waiting to go in are standing in 4 degree temperature," Riesterer told WWJ's Mike Campbell.

Firefighters wear gear that does protect them from extreme temperatures, but it can only do so much.

"The protective equipment that the firefighters wear is a triple layered coat and pants that are insulated thermally," said Riesterer. "So in cold weather it helps protect from the cold, but it also helps insulate them from the heat."

Medical personnel were on standby as a precaution.

The building was unoccupied at the time the fire took off. No injuries were reported.

A cause of the fire remains under investigation.
