(WWJ) With the extension of the governor’s "Stay Home, Stay Safe" order in Michigan, Forgotten Harvest is continuing its mission to deliver food to those in need.
"It means we keep on working," said Forgotten Harvest CEO Kirk Mayes, telling WWJ's Vickie Thomas that some 200 volunteers will be at well over a dozen locations, from Detroit to Romeo this week.
"We continue to stay to our mission and try to do the best we can to serve our community. We are actually in support of the governor's decision of extending the stay-at-home order."
Forgotten Harvest — which rescues food surpluses from grocery stores, markets and restaurants that would have gone to waste — provides metro Detroit families who are food-insecure, and are struggling to cover the cost of basic life necessities, with pantry items and groceries.
"We realize there's a lot of people who still haven't resolved their challenges with the health crisis, and tend to shift with whatever the need is in our community," Mayes said. "And right now we're most concerned about making sure we help people and we keep everybody safe."
Mayes says Forgotten Harvest workers and volunteers are tested, and are all negative for COVID-19.
