CLAY TWP. (WWJ) - There's welcome news for residents of Harsens Island in southern St. Clair County.
The ferry that provides vehicle traffic to-and-from the island is up and running again after being cut off for nearly a week due to a landing collapse that created a nightmare for folks getting on and off the island.
Earlier, residents called on Gov. Gretchen Whitmer to help, asking for the state to get involved the reconstruction of the ferry landing that collapsed into the North Channel last Wednesday, forcing residents to travel on foot, with no way to move their vehicles across the St. Clair River.
Clay Township Supervisor Artie Bryson, who represents the roughly 1,000 year-round residents of the island, said he gets their frustration.
"I understand it one hundred percent," he told WWJ's Jon Hewett. "The ferry not being operational is really unacceptable to me and the township board. And also, you know, there's a lot of contractors that were working over there affected quite a bit."
Bryson said it's believed that high water in the area was to blame for the collapse.
Looking ahead, there is word about discussions ongoing about the feasibility of building a bridge to link the island to the mainland.
